Tight-Access Stump Grinding: How 36-Inch Gate Access Protects Manicured Backyards

Plenty of homeowners have been told their backyard stump is "impossible to reach" without pulling down a section of fence. It usually is not. The right equipment slips through a standard gate and grinds the stump without leaving your manicured yard looking like a construction site. Here is how tight-access grinding works.

The 36-inch gate is the key measurement

A standard residential side gate is about 36 inches wide, and full-size stump grinders simply will not fit through it. Our narrow-track, low-profile grinders are built specifically to pass through that 36-inch opening. Getting in is only half the job

Protecting your lawn on the way to the stump is the other half. A compact grinder still has weight, and dragged across a nice lawn it will rut. We lay plywood tracks and turf-protection mats along the route and around the work area so the machine's weight is spread out and your grass survives. We shield beds, patios, and fences from flying chips as well.

Steep and terraced backyards

Around the canyon lots of Myrtle Creek and the hillside neighborhoods of Roseburg, backyards are often steep or terraced. That is exactly why our machines are tracked and low to the ground — a low center of gravity keeps them stable on grade where a wheeled grinder could not safely work. Tight and steep is our normal.

The same below-grade result

Fitting through a gate does not mean a compromised job. We grind the stump 8–14 inches below grade just as we would in an open front yard, and we chase the surface roots that lift lawns and sprout suckers. When we are done, we backfill, remove the mats, rake the area, and leave the backyard clean and level — the stump gone, the fence standing, and the lawn intact.

What if the gate really is too narrow?

Occasionally a gate is narrower than 36 inches or blocked by a fixed obstacle. In that rare case, temporarily removing and reinstalling a single fence panel is far cheaper and less disruptive than the alternatives, and we can coordinate that for you. But the whole point of our compact machines is that this is the exception, not the rule.

If a tree company told you your stump could not be reached, get a second opinion. More often than not, our grinders get to it — through the gate, over the lawn, and out again, with your backyard looking like we were never there.
