Laminated Root Rot and Annosus Root Disease: Identifying Hidden Tree Killers in the PNW

The most dangerous tree diseases in the Pacific Northwest are the ones you cannot see. Laminated root rot and annosus (Heterobasidion) root disease attack conifers from the roots up, hollowing the anchor and support system while the tree above may still look green. The result is a tree that fails suddenly, often in wind, with little warning at the crown. Learning the signs is the only way to get ahead of them.
What these diseases do
Both are fungal root diseases that decay the roots and lower trunk of conifers — Douglas fir is highly susceptible to laminated root rot, and true firs, hemlocks, and pines are hit by annosus. The fungi spread through root contact from tree to tree, which is why they often appear in expanding "disease centers" where trees fail in a growing circle. Because the damage is underground, a tree can lose most of its structural root support before the crown shows much distress.
The signs at the crown
Since you cannot see the roots, watch the top of the tree:
- Thinning, off-color crown — reduced needle density and a dull, yellow-green cast
- Stress cone crops — a sudden heavy crop of cones as a dying tree tries to reproduce
- Distress growth — shortened new shoots and a generally declining top
- Grouped decline — several nearby conifers fading together in a patch
That grouped, expanding pattern is a hallmark of root disease and distinguishes it from a single stressed tree.
The signs at the base
Closer to the ground, look for fungal fruiting bodies (conks) at the root collar or on nearby stumps, resin bleeding low on the trunk, and — the giveaway — trees that uproot rather than snap, revealing decayed, stubby, "laminated" roots that pull apart in layers. If a conifer in a group has already fallen and its root plate shows rotten, delaminating roots, treat the neighbors as suspect.
Why a professional assessment is essential
Root disease is genuinely difficult to diagnose from the ground, and it is easy to mistake for drought stress or bark beetle attack — which often move in on trees already weakened by root rot. A hazardous tree assessment examines the root collar, the crown pattern, and the surrounding trees to distinguish root disease from other causes and to gauge how far a disease center has spread. This matters across the timbered ground of Douglas County and the fir-heavy foothills around Glide, where laminated root rot is a real presence.
What can be done
There is no practical cure for an infected tree — the decay is already in the roots. Management is about safety and containment: removing infected and hazardous trees before they fall, especially those near homes, driveways, and lines, and being thoughtful about what gets replanted in a known disease center, since susceptible species will simply be reinfected. In some settings, replanting with more resistant species is the long-term answer.
The lesson of root disease is humility: a green crown does not guarantee a sound tree. If conifers on your property are declining in a group, or one has fallen revealing rotten roots, have the survivors assessed before wind makes the decision for you.
