Think in three zones

The recognized approach divides the area around your home into zones, each with a different job:

Zone 1 — the immediate zone (0–5 feet)

The five feet closest to the house is the most important and the most overlooked. This is where embers land and ignite whatever is against the wall. Keep it clear of flammable material: no shrubs against siding, no bark mulch, no firewood, no branches overhanging the roof. This zone does more to protect a home than any other.

Zone 2 — the intermediate zone (5–30 feet)

Here the goal is to break the path of fire. Thin trees so their crowns are not touching, remove ladder fuels — the low limbs and brush that let a ground fire climb into the canopy — and clear dead material. "Limbing up" trees so the lowest branches are well off the ground is central to this zone.

Zone 3 — the extended zone (30–100+ feet)

Farther out, reduce fuel so a crown fire has less to feed on as it approaches. Thin overcrowded stands, remove dead and dying trees, and space groups of trees apart. On slopes, extend these distances — fire moves faster uphill.
